Official CSD - FTP Downloadables

Post by youonlywish on Sat Aug 13, 2011 4:37 pm

I had initially started to host some files - mainly promotional flyers and such, on Dropbox. It was decent - far from perfect. First of all, it lacked the storage space and was rather limited in the amount of security I could grant each user. I've found a suitable replacement for the time being - and before I give out the address, let me explain where I'd like to see this little sub-project go.

I'm not going to post the address and credentials as part of a write up on CSD. Rather, I'm going to provide it here - hopefully that filters out a few of the websurfers as it is.

Next - I'd like to go over some general rules. I know - more rules. At least this way nobody can say that they didn't know or were otherwise ignorant to the greater ideal of this project. Let's get at it then;

-DO NOT leave anything that could be considered illegal or of malicious content.
-DO NOT leave anything pornographic or otherwise offensive. Racist content will not be tolerated.
-There is a LOG FILE. Add your name and contribution - FILES NOT FOUND LISTED IN THE LOG FILE WILL BE REMOVED.

It's pretty simple - don't be an idiot.

If I have to - I'll limit this interaction to certain users, but I'd like to keep it in the cloud.

-

So, what is it already?

I've got an FTP server set up to host files. I've got plenty of space and a good enough connection.

I'd like to start a collection of good, solid information regarding preparedness and self sufficiency. There's a lot of crap out there and I'm hoping that with enough like-minded individuals working together to upload good quality information, we can get a nice cache of better information for all to benefit from.

-Farming, water keeping, woodworking, caching, land navigation, radio operation - anything that would be suitable information for someone looking to learn a new skill or gain a new perspective on an old one.

Keep in mind the rules posted above.

The credentials will change from time to time for access - check back to find the latest username/password set. These listed credentials are for read-only access. If you'd like to contribute, PM me directly.

Today's credentials:
Server = sheepdogfiles.homeftp.org
Username = sheepdog
Password = sheepdog

I'll add more information as needed, here.

Let's use this thread to discuss where this mini-project could go. Focus, direction, content... anything.

Good idea, but having it open to the public like this allows people to come in and mess with it, most likely in the form of dropping malicious content in there.

I'd suggest having this moderated, or allow people who come forward with something to share to have access - but we shouldn't just hand out write access (though read access should and can be available, just make the directory http/web viewable).

By the way, because I cannot (as a basic user at the moment) overwrite/delete files, I had to upload a fresh LOG.txt after uploading a file because I cannot edit the existing one. Another reason why this service should be managed by us and not free-use. I know, it sucks, but technology can be a bitch. lol

I have a 3.3GB file full of various US military manuals, technical sheets, etc. as well that I can put up... though I think that would fare better as a torrent.

Good point. That's why I love having people to bounce off of. The 'sheepdog' username is read-only.

I'll create separate usernames for each person interested - that way it's all trackable on my end too.

The read-only part would be better served by a page listing the files available for download. Having to log into an FTP server just to grab a file is a bit cumbersome, especially when all you have is the file name to give you any indication as to what you're actually downloading. For uploading, it works well - though if we do decide to go with a full site, most content management systems have a built in "downloads" module.
