Bush Axe - Where to buy?

Post by youonlywish on Fri Sep 09, 2011 9:53 pm

So - I'm gonna go buy a new bush axe. I'm currently only in possession of a Canadian Tire Camping Hatchet... it's decent but I need something a little more robust than a hatchet.

Will the axe's in Canadian Tire suffice?

What's your experience?

There are two common types of heads, splitters and standard. For "bush" work where you're using your axe to fell trees I recommend the standard head. For home or camp use, where the majority of your axe use will be splitting firewood, you should get the splitter. The standard is the best compromise as it will do both jobs and is handier to swing/carry.

Synthetic and metal handles look cool and last a long time, but they add weight and imbalance. Some people swear by them, but I suggest you also consider wood handles when deciding on which axe to purchase - the weight is more biased towards the head (where you want it) and you can replace the handles should the need arise (and it will, but not for a long time).

Length is a much debated issue, since there's generally three or four different ones to choose from. For "bush" use I'd recommend getting one no longer than the pack you're carrying.

Canadian Tire sells decent axes at reasonable prices, but Home Hardware, Home Depot, Lowes, and Rona all carry various offerings that you can look into as well.

At Canadian Tire, this would be your best bet (IMO): http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/6/Tools/CuttingChopping/AxesHatchetsBowsaws/PRD~0575117P/Yardworks+Wood+Axe%2C+3.5-lbs.jsp?locale=en

Avoid Fiskars and JobMate, they are value brands.

I looked at Lowes today - saw a bunch of them but didn't trust the quality upon handling any of them. I'll look at Canadian Tire tomorrow morning.

I bought this axe a year ago: http://www.workwearcanada.com/products/detail.cfm?product=7. I'm not an expert but here's my impression:

It's fairly lightweight because of the small head and wood handle. The construction is solid, the head never wobbled, and the "factory edge" is pretty good. I usually carry it on the side of my pack when I'm camping (it's small enough to fit most bags). I never carried it on a long hike though, but I don't think I would carry any axe on a long hike. For a house axe, it's not enough, but for a short trip, I find it very handy! I split most small or medium logs easily and I felled trees about 6'' of diameter.

Of course, it's not as cheap as the Canadian Tire ones, but I wanted to treat myself at the time!

Anyway, just another option...

Vincent, that's a lovely hatchet you posted there. I wouldn't exactly call it an axe, though, it's a little on the small side for that. Smile

Picked up the smaller one from CT. Review en route.

Your mileage may vary. Mine wasn't anything to write home about.
