Paid, ad-free, hosting > free hosting... especially when those ads make noise!
Contrast is your friend.

Re: Suggestions
Whoa - didn't know they made noise.
I'm just trying to see if there is enough momentum on a forum to get it going before I drop coin on it, you know?
I can pay this site for the ad's to be removed... any other recommendations?
And for contrast - set the background darker then?

Re: Suggestions
Don't know if it's just my browser (Firefox) but that chat box at the top of the home page is quite obnoxious.
Re: Suggestions
I hate to be that guy - but could we use some more descriptive terms?
Do I need to change the background colour?
Scratch - would it fit better at the bottom of the page, for you?

Re: Suggestions
Not a matter of fit, I'm afraid. It's right there in your face and takes up most of the screen, so when I click the home button, I have to scroll past (and in some cases minimize) the chat box before navigating the forums.
Re: Suggestions
I see.
We'll try it out at the bottom - I mean, if people want to chat, they'll find it, right?

Re: Suggestions
Sorry for being vague earlier. I was referring to the difference in shade/colour between the background and the text. It's become very "web 2.0" to have low contrast on sites to make it look more chic/modern, as you would see in an upscale restaurant or penthouse studio. It looks FANTASTIC on some monitors, but on others it makes certain elements very difficult to see. Mine is pretty good, but when I go onto my laptop it tends to be a different story.
It's all about finding a good middle ground. Sometimes concessions need to be made on the art end of things to better serve the basic usability of it all. Black text on a white background may be hard on the eyes after a time, so I understand why so many people tend to avoid it... but a (very) dark gray on a (very) light grey would do nicely... I usually go one or two hex steps off white or black.
Where black is referred to as "#000000", going "#222222" is usually enough to take the edge off for screen fonts.
White, being "#FFFFFF", a good background choice (the background where the text will be on, that is) is often fine at "#EEEEEE" or "#DDDDDD".
The background is great where it's at right now, but try changing the normal fonts another step or two darker and it will be perfect.
Edit: Also noticed that the contrasts on the links need adjustment. The headers, post names, etc. that are all black on a dark gray background should be white. The visited links are all black, but on a forum these links should not have a visited state enabled on them because they're part of the primary navigation and they will always be in their visited state... plus when they are they're black and nearly invisible.
