I'm going to start another series-based post - this time, on the 870 shotgun, manufactured by Remington. I'll cover a few different things as separate posts; introduction, as a weapons system, accessories and field work.

A lot of folks are looking for a 'first gun'... I think the 870 makes a wonderful option.

PART 1 - INTRODUCTION

I'll be looking into the 870 as both a tactical and traditional firearm.

Great post.

I am happy to say my 870 is the first firearm I bought. Will mainly use it as a home defense gun in addition to random plinking with friends.

Ray, your 870 is capable of everything with the right barrel, choke, and loads. You can even hunt deer with it.

I started with 870 but have moved to the Mossberg 590a1 because the Mossberg is easier to detail strip and repair.
Both are great shotguns and I found the thumb safety easier to engage and disengage with the Mossberg 590a1 unless you have a pistol grip. Then the 870 is easier to index that safety for use.
Past the safety it falls on personal preference, much like the 7.62x39 and .223 debate.

Yeah - and I'm finding that more and more... even from people who have never SHOT either of them before.

Sadly the only shotgun I own is a fixed choke (open bore?) J c higgins model 20.. I'm in process of fixing 'er up as we speak. Anyone know of a good take down manual for it?
